TEAM
Arene's goal is to open vehicle programming to everyone by simplifying vehicle software development and increasing deployment frequency without compromising safety and security. This will create a whole new market of vehicle application developers who, through software, integrate a vehicle into our daily lives in novel ways. Arene aims to significantly improve how vehicles are designed and developed, and we're working closely with Toyota to realize this goal in its next-generation vehicles.
You will work as a team member in one of the following function:
Efficiency Tooling
Arene's efficiency tooling teams build and maintain toolchains and automations to create, build and analyze automotive grade software. This enables development teams to produce high quality (safe, secure, and performant) software efficiently by catching issues early in the development process. Our areas of interest include scalable build systems, code and runtime analysis, compiler infrastructure and other related tools.
Required Skills: Python and/or Go, Basic CI/CD knowledge, Bazel, Basic knowledge of toolchains
Test Rigs
The Test Rigs team is responsible for building vehicle computer hardware emulation environments (virtual vehicle) which realize the "shift-left" of software development and providing technical support to software engineers in liaison with hardware and software suppliers.
Required Skills: Golang, Python or Similar
Arene Data
Arene's data platform provides a secure and scalable cloud location for the data generated by millions of vehicles, which in turn enables data-driven decisions, supports the Toyota Production System, drives customer value, generates revenue, and reduces product time-to-market.
Required Skills: Familiarity with Kotlin would be ideal
SRE
Arene SRE team is established to improve reliability and resiliency of Arene services and applications, and we work alongside developers to create an environment where developers feel supported when they are operating their services and keep their availability targets. Our main focus areas are deployments, observability and incident response, but also help with development practices, build & test systems, tooling and documentation.
Required Skills: Basic kubernetes and backend service development experience

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Collaborating with a team of experienced software developers to design and develop software solutions for automotive systems.
- Participating in code reviews and contributing to the overall quality of the software development process.
- Assisting with software testing and debugging to ensure high-quality, reliable software solutions.
- Documenting software design, development, and testing activities.
- Contributing to the continuous improvement of software development practices and processes.
- Throughout the internship, you will have the opportunity to work on challenging and exciting projects, gain hands-on experience in the automotive industry, and develop your software development skills in a dynamic and collaborative team environment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in computer science, software engineering or a similar major with an expected graduation date December 2023 – March 2025 *Must be in school
- Must be available for a 3-month on-site internship in the summer of 2023
- Have no more than 24 months of professional full-time work experience in the technology field (excluding internships, research and/or teaching assistant roles, and military experience).
- Strong foundation in software development concepts and principles.
- Familiarity with software development tools and technologies commonly used in the automotive industry.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think creatively.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
- While prior experience in the automotive industry is not required, a passion for the industry and a desire to learn and grow in this field are essential.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Familiarity with software development in an automotive context.
- Experience with agile software development methodologies.
- Familiarity with software testing frameworks and techniques, such as unit testing and integration testing.
- Experience with version control systems, such as Git.
- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable software solutions.
- Passion for the automotive industry and a desire to learn and grow in this field.
- While not required, any additional experience or coursework in the automotive industry or related fields such as electrical engineering or mechanical engineering would be considered a plus.
